Yesterday at the gym I saw a guy, must have been beg 50’s who was on this mission to push his body to near breaking point. I bet you 50 kroner when he got home he collapsed in a pile of pain.

He had this silent competition going with some buff 30 something guy. The young guy I am sure completely unaware of the ongoing competition. The older guy was following the buff guy around lagging a few steps behind keeping one or two apparatus between them. He would watch the buff dude and try and outdo him. He looked fierce, eye of the tiger totally focused on the task at hand.

It was painful to watch, I was fearful that the old dude might seriously injure himself, but it seemed that mind over matter was the name of the game.

At the very end of the cycle the young guy did chin-ups, easily pulling off 10 at a time only struggling on the last one of the fourth set, impressive indeed. At this point young dude had noticed old dude, and by the looks of compassion he really felt for him.

Old dude jumped up grabbed the bar, started to lift himself, I was amazed he could do any at all, but he managed 3 chin-ups before moving on, with crazed look in his eyes. Young dude looked after him, shaking his head almost imperceptively.

Oh, the sights to behold at the gym.

Ok, so a friend of mine (read OMG unbelievably cute guy *drool*) told me that if I really want to get in shape, I have to work out every single day, even if it is only for 20 minutes (although a short amount of time = really high impact).

Everyone who knows me, knows that I suffer from a severe case of couch potatoitis, so severe in fact that on occasion my butt has been known to fuse with the fabric of the couch, my whole being taking on the coloring of the couch in chameleon like fashion all the while achieving a state of total oneness with the TV – deep brainless meditation ensues.

I have said that 2010 is going to be all about sports, and that I plan on welcoming any challenge that anyone brings on (disclaimer – please note, I may refuse invites from exes, do not take personally).

So a workout EVERY DAY is indeed a challenge, in my world, it is a challenge of biblical proportions. The question isn’t really whether or not I CAN do it but whether I WILL do it. In order for it to feel at all doable I’ll need to have a short term goal. One week at a time, exactly like when I cut out coffee. Day one -> day seven (good thing this upcoming week is a child free one).

I am going to go for it; today there are two classes at the gym!! Starting at 15:00.. Butt will not be allowed to fuse today!

My overall goal for 2010: gonna get into Cougar shape this year – watch out all you young things from 32 – 45.

Btw, does homicide by French horn count as a workout?
